In FLOWER+ project, in which Spominčica Alzheimer Slovenia is a partner, we tested two activities, “Painting Rocks” and “Tree Identification Walk,” at our Daily Center for people with dementia. A total of 14 individuals, including frail older people, informal carers, and volunteers, participated in these activities. The primary aim was to evaluate the effectiveness, engagement, and feedback from the participants.
Participants found the painting rocks activity calming and therapeutic. It evoked nostalgic memories, with some participants recalling times spent with their grandchildren. There were lively discussions about the types of flowers painted on the rocks. One participant suggested incorporating a nature walk to collect rocks for painting. Different types of paints or materials, such as watercolors or pastels, were proposed for future sessions. It was noted that the stones should not be too small, as this could be challenging for individuals with poor motor skills. All participants expressed a willingness to recommend this activity to others.
Participants enjoyed being outdoors and learning about different tree species. Identifying trees and hearing interesting facts about them were particularly appreciated. The physical activity aspect was also well-received. Some participants suggested that having more time to sit, observe, sketch, or journal about the trees would enhance the experience. The idea of providing a small booklet or guide to take home was well-liked.
Both activities, “Painting Rocks” and “Tree Identification Walk,” received positive feedback from the participants. They found the activities engaging, educational, and calming. Based on their suggestions, future sessions could include collecting rocks during nature walks, using various painting materials, allowing more time for observation and journaling, and providing take-home guides. These activities not only fostered a sense of community and creativity but also provided therapeutic benefits to the participants.
